"Please understand there are three connecting resorts. At the bottom end is the Caribe/Beach, in the middle is Tropical/Colonial, and the newest one is the Palace.
We stayed at the middle one (Colonial/Tropical) and it was perfect for family with kids. The pools and beach are perfect. Food buffet is air conditioned!!! The Caribe/Beach is not which seems to alter other vacationers and servers moods! We walked down there for one breakfast and .... wow. It was more like a hot cafeteria. The lobby washrooms smelled horrible. There was not as much garden plantings around the pool as the other two resorts. Also the Beach/Caribe does not have the kids play-pool (slides).
In sharp contrast .... the Colonial/Tropical and Palace are AWESOME. Very very clean. Kids pools, and most importantly ... air-conditioned dining. You will not know hunger during your stay! Plenty of foods for the kids to enjoy.!! All the walkways are thatch-covered roofs (whereas the Caribe/Beach are canvas covered). Pools are surrounded with plants ... very pretty. Not so much at the Caribe/Beach.
Drinks.... well, here's the deal; you will not get strong cocktails from the bar. Everything is pretty weak. Lots of various drinks to try and as much beer as one can hold. Keep in mind, you are one vacation .... and don't want to spend the following days with headaches, so it's probably good they're weak. Recommendation.....bring your own large insulated cup! The resort cups are very small and very used. You can order any drink and hand them your cup. Way cool.
Kids loved the resort .... but after three days of pool, beach, eat, pool, beach, eat, pool, beach, eat..... it was getting old. We stayed 6 nights and we probably should have taken an excursion. Safety was never a concern. Kids stayed in eyesight most of the time only dissapearing to fetch another icecream cone. I left my camera poolside a a few times without problems.
The Palace.... I did not see the rooms. The dining area is oceanside and has cushy chairs. I noticed a slightly better kids pool with more.... stuff.
I'd recommend that you drag your own luggage to your room. Kids will be anxious waiting for swimsuits .... and after a day of waiting at airports and waiting for transfers and waiting waiting waiting..... you do not want to be in your room waiting for the luggage to be delivered.
If you NEED the internet or need to communicate, bring a laptop. You can wirelessly connect near the lobby for e-mailing and internet calls via yahoo messenger (or whatever you use) They do have computers available for emailing for a very small fee.
